Volusia, Flagler nursing home residents receive risky drugs for dementia |

Neill R. Graff-Radford, a professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. Most often the drugs are prescribed to help control delusions and aggressive behavior sometimes found in dementia patients. But if this is necessary, dosages should be low, closely monitored and only administered for a limited period of time, he said. A review of state inspection reports by The News-Journal revealed 10 nursing homes have been cited in the past 16 months for not properly documenting the use of antipsychotic medications and monitoring for side effects. Those facilities are Carlton Shores Health and Rehabilitation Center, Coastal Health and Rehabilitation Center, Coquina Center, Deltona Health Care, Flagler Pines, Good Samaritan Society-Daytona, Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Seaside Health and Rehabilitation Center, Signature Healthcare of Ormond and Villa Health & Rehabilitation Center. Researchers at the University of South Florida examined nursing home records in the Tampa Bay area and found the drugs are often used to control yelling and aggression, which might be better handled by identifying and correcting the underlying issues triggering the behavior, Molinari said. Nursing home administrators reported they lacked the resources to maintain a stable, well-trained staff that could devote the time and attention needed to control these problem residents without medication, he said.
